Oil, butter, and pot size are all specific to the stovetop method — an air popper doesn't take popping oil, and "pot size" isn't a meaningful question for an appliance with a fixed chamber. Where do the pot-size recommendations come from?
From the batch's final POPPED volume, not the raw kernel amount, because the popped corn has to keep expanding inside the same pot while the last kernels are still going off.
